Padel Americano: Rules, Format and How to Run One

What a padel Americano is, how scoring and rotation work, how many points to play, and how to run an Americano tournament with 4, 8 or more players.

The Americano is the most popular social format in padel. Instead of fixed pairs playing sets, everyone rotates partners and plays short matches to a set number of points. At the end, each player has an individual total, and the highest total wins.

It's perfect for club nights, mixed levels and groups that don't have fixed partners.

How an Americano works

  1. Players: any multiple of four works best: 4, 8, 12, 16 players.
  2. Rounds: in each round, players are paired up and matched on courts. Partners change every round, so you play with as many different people as possible.
  3. Points, not games: each match is played to a fixed total of points, often 16, 21, 24 or 32. Every rally counts as one point.
  4. Individual score: every player adds the points their pair won in that match to their own total.
  5. Winner: after the last round, the player with the most points wins.

Serving in an Americano

Serving rotates every few points so everyone serves equally. A common rule is that each player serves four points in a row in a match to 16, or six in a match to 24.

Example: 24-point match

Pair A wins 15 points and Pair B wins 9. Both players on Pair A add 15 to their totals, and both players on Pair B add 9. Even losing players collect points, so every rally matters until the end.

Americano vs Mexicano

In an Americano, the pairings are set in advance. In a Mexicano, the pairings for each round are based on the current standings, so players of similar level end up together. Many groups start with an Americano and switch to Mexicano once they know each other.
