12 Padel Tips for Beginners to Improve Fast
Practical padel tips for beginners: positioning, using the walls, the lob, the volley, communication with your partner and what to practise first.
Padel is easy to start but takes a lifetime to master. The good news: a handful of habits will make you better almost immediately. These are the tips coaches give beginners over and over.
Work on two or three at a time rather than all twelve at once.
Positioning
1. Move as a pair
Imagine a rope between you and your partner. When one goes to the net, the other follows; when one retreats, so does the other. Leaving a gap down the middle is the most common beginner mistake.
2. Get to the net
Most points are won at the net. After a good serve, a deep lob or a weak reply from your opponents, move forward together.
3. Don't stand too close to the back glass
Stay a step or two in front of the back wall when defending, so the ball has room to come off the glass.
Using the walls
4. Let the ball come to you
If the ball is going to hit the back glass, wait. Turn sideways, let it rebound and hit it on the way out. Rushing the shot is how points are lost.
5. Learn the side-wall rebound
Balls into the corner hit the side and back walls. Practise reading them in a slow rally with a friend.
Shots
6. Lob, lob, lob
A high, deep lob over the net players is the best way to move from defence to attack. Aim for the back corners.
7. Keep volleys compact
At the net, use a short, firm punch rather than a swing. Aim low at the opponents' feet or down the middle.
8. Use the continental grip
Hold the racket as if you're shaking hands with it on its edge. One grip works for nearly every shot.
9. Don't smash everything
Big smashes often bounce back off the glass for an easy reply. A controlled overhead (the bandeja) keeps you at the net.
Teamwork and mindset
10. Talk constantly
Call "mine", "yours" and "switch". Balls down the middle are won by the pair that communicates.
11. Play the percentages
Keep the ball in play and wait for a mistake. At beginner level, unforced errors decide most matches.
12. Play often, and keep score
Short, regular sessions beat occasional long ones. Keeping score makes practice competitive and shows your progress over time.
